Game of Thrones Season 8 Marketing Heats Up
HBO was serious when it tweeted 2019 is the year Game of Thrones comes back. Since then, there’s been new footage and the first snippet of dialogue, released during the Golden Globes telecast. Now next Sunday, just before the premiere of True Detective Season 3, comes the promise of a date announcement trailer.
The good news here is HBO isn’t using Game of Thrones footage to prop up a show that isn’t worth it. I’ve seen the first five episodes of True Detective, and not only is the new installment a return to Season 1 form, but the first two episodes are the best of the batch by miles. Highly recommend.
As for the footage released last Sunday (when I was on shift covering the Golden Globes elsewhere), it’s a total fake out, but everyone fell for it anyway. The GoT stuff starts at the 38-second mark.
Now, obviously, Sansa isn’t handing Winterfell over to Dany. That’s the exact same wording Ned Stark used when Robert Baratheon came to visit in Season 1. It’s merely a Westerosi formality, in a scene that’s going to heavily echo how the series began in 2011.
But taken out of context, it sure sounds like it. Also note how Daenerys jumps, as if to say “I’m sorry, what? Winterfell is mine?” A reminder that the formalities of the land she would like to rule are not something she’s actually trained in. Like, at all.
Meanwhile, the new teaser — which may or may not have a single ounce of new footage, but will have a debut date for the new season — arrives somewhere between 8:55 and 8:59 p.m. ET on Sunday, January 13, 2019.
