Killing Eve Renewed For a Second Season Before It Premieres
BBC America is counting on this show to be a hit. Have I mentioned you should watch the premiere?
Usually, stations wait a bit before they announce a renewal, even if everyone knows one is coming. HBO makes it a game of “wait for the overnight ratings of the premiere” and then they announce they’re moving forward. Over across the pond, ITV waits until the finale airs and then announces straight away the morning after that the next season is ago.
BBC America is probably being a little over eager about announcing Killing Eve is coming back next year before the premiere has even aired. But the buzz is good. Moreover, one of the hurdles that arose in this new glut age of “peak TV” is that fans who might have started a series won’t always do so until they’re sure they’re not about to fall in love with a one and done series.
Killing Eve could have easily become a one-and-done series. In my review, I noted that I wanted Eve and Villanelle’s showdown to be drawn out (or at least that writer Pheobe Waller-Bridge has another character like her up her sleeve) because this is a show that deserves more than one season. Guess I wasn’t the only one.
According to Deadline, Sarah Barnett, President of BBC America put out the following statement:
This show has the thunder of women on both sides of the chase in Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer and, importantly, behind the camera with the lavishly brilliant Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The early response to Killing Eve has been incredible – for that reason, as well as the fact that we wholeheartedly love this original, funny, thrillingly entertaining series, we are delighted to move ahead with a second season before we even premiere.
Killing Eve premiers this coming Sunday, April 8, 2018, at 8 p.m. ET on BBC America. Let’s hope the ratings equal the buzz.
