Game of Thrones Showrunners Are Doing A Star Wars Trilogy And I Fell All The Way Over
Star Wars is giving everyone a trilogy. And you get a trilogy! And you! And you!
There are two major fandoms in the fantasy universe right now: Game of Thrones and Star Wars. As the former draws to a close, the latter is welcoming them with open arms as they expand their universe. That is to say, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have just been announced as the creators behind a new Star Wars trilogy. I guess Peter Dinklage is going to get his wish to be in Star Wars. He has connections now.
And to be clear, this is NOT the Rian Johnson trilogy that was already announced. This is *in addition to* the Star Wars trilogy Rian Johnson will start after Episode IX is over.
(Considering that Benioff and Weiss’ next gig was *supposed* to be Confederate, does this mean that HBO is quietly making that disappear?)
Here’s the press release:
It was announced today that Benioff and Weiss, creators of the smash-hit, Emmy Award-winning television series Game of Thrones, will write and produce a new series of Star Wars films. These new films will be separate from both the episodic Skywalker saga and the recently-announced trilogy being developed by Rian Johnson, writer-director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Kathleen Kennedy was very pleased with herself. Let’s hope she doesn’t have to fire them like she did Lord & Miller.
“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”
Benioff and Weiss, meanwhile, are over the moon. Because, well, wouldn’t you be?
“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since,” Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement. “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”
