Stranger Things Boys Join Forces To Become The Upside Downs
Some of the Stranger Things boys from Hawkins have the Broadway talent. Then there’s Mike Wheeler.
James Cordon is still trying to bounce back from the one-two punch of hugging Sean Spicer and then the creepy Peter Rabbit trailer. So he’s gone back to doing what he does best. Getting celebrities to sing. It’s working too. Though his ratings initially took a hit (a fact not helped by Jimmy Kimmel’s rising star), he’s evened out again, and back to his favorite sketches.
Except in this case, he got up on stage and sang with them. “Them” being the four boys from Stranger Things. That’s Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin and Noah Schnapp. (Schnapp’s lack of disappearance this season meant he got to earn full cast membership.) Cordon, being the sort of UKer he is, decided to play Simon Cowell and turn them into a boy band, complete with a Motown medley of gold standard oldies.
There’s only one small problem. Stranger Things ain’t the X-Factor. Not all actors can sing, and not all actors are capable of doing choreography either. Two of these boys have serious Broadway experience under their belt. Two do not. No points for guessing which are the latter two.
For those wondering, the answer to which two have spent time doing choreography and singing six times a week: Gaten Matarazzo and Caleb McLaughlin. Matarazzo was Gavroche in the 2014 Les Mis revival after getting his start in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert in 2011. McLaughlin spent two years as Young Simba in The Lion King from 2012-2014.
(Finn Wolfhard starred in the smash hit It last fall, but I guess they don’t teach kids how to remember basic choreography on horror movie sets. Schnapp’s not nearly as bad, either in photography or singing, thankfully. I’m just sorry they couldn’t round up Millie Bobby Brown.)
