Stranger Things Season 2 Trailer Looks To Improve On The Formula
Stranger Things has dropped their second trailer, quietly fixing some of the flaws of the first season.
There were a lot of things that Stranger Things got right in the first season of the Netflix 80s sci-fi pastiche. The feel of the era. The tenor of the adventure. The references galore. They also landed a few hella casting coups, making stars of Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo and Joe Keery, along with reviving the career of Winona Ryder.
But there were failings, and the biggest one was in the women’s parts division. Everyone already knows about Barb, the nothing of a character who literally existed to be murdered as Nancy lost her virginity, a plot device more than a person. The reaction to her online was so strong, it garnered the actress, Shannon Purser, the world’s oddestly earned Emmy nomination.
One of the most obvious things about the new trailer is how the Duffer brothers are going around correcting that. There’s a new girl in town for the boys to hang out with in Eleven’s place, (Sadie Sink’s Max), Nancy’s part is expanded and extended to the point where Hopper literally tosses her a rifle. And Eleven? Well, Mama, she’s coming home.
In terms of plot, things are expanding. Or as Hooper says, “it’s not like it was before — it’s grown.” Will is now the one wearing hospital gowns and looking as if he needs to escape via a sewer or two. (At least his mom is there, defending him every step of the way.) And Sean Astin has arrived because no 80s kid’s based mystery is complete without a real-life Goonie to start running around the place.
But the most unexpected pairing I’m digging? Dustin and Steve, at the far end of the clip job. Too bad Negan already trademarked that style baseball bat. It suits him.
