Doctor Who Season 10 Next Time Trailer: Empress of Mars
The Ice Warriors return to Doctor Who in all their rubber suited alligator skinned like glory.
Well, now that the disappointing three parter–and the regeneration fake out–are over and out of the way, let’s go back to some monster of the week business, shall we? Starting with Bill meeting the ice Warriors, the Doctor Who aliens that are what we think of when we think of the definitive stereotype on the 1970s sci-fi rubber suited monster.
Here’s your synopsis:
The Doctor, Bill and Nardole arrive on Mars and find themselves in an impossible conflict between Ice Warriors… and Victorian soldiers. As the Martian hive awakens around them, the Doctor faces a unique dilemma – this time the humans, not the Ice Warriors are the invaders. When Earth is invading Mars, whose side is he on?
Since when were Victorians invading Mars?
I mean, this jives with the original mythos of the Ice Warriors–they’re from Mars, as is established in the first episode they were seen in, Series 5’s Second Doctor adventure “The Ice Warriors.” In that one, set slightly into the future, the Ice Warriors were invading Earth, as Mars, as humans had just discovered that decade, is a dead planet.
Prior to the Mariner missions in the 1960s, scifi assumed Mars to be a habitable living planet, which lead to such stories like Edgar Rice Burrough’s “The Princess of Mars” which inspired our title. And from the looks of the trailer, the planet the Victorians are hanging out on is the sort of pre-1960s vision of Mars, as if Mars was somehow alive as long as we believed it.
I will give it that this episode has all the feeling of the Second Doctor episode as well. Here’s your trailer.
This week’s episode of Doctor Who airs Saturday, June 10th at the restabilized time of 7:15 pm BT on BBC One. BBC America continues to be a bastion of continuity, and airs as always at 9pm ET.
