Best and Most Relaxed of the Spirit Awards Red Carpet
The Independent Spirit Awards. Though the Razzies try as they might to be the “anti-Oscars” the ISAs really are the anti-Oscars. (Because unlike the Razzies, the big name show up.) They’re so anti_Oscars, the carpet is blue. They’re so anti-Oscars, no one tells you who they are wearing. They’re so anti-Oscars, there is no Worst Dressed.
No really. There is no worst dressed here. Because everyone came casual, and no one tried too hard. Ok, well maybe one or two, but one of those outfits was the best of the night.
Cate Blanchett. I don’t care if it’s rational. I love this dress. I love the big koi at the hem, I love the peacock in the will of the bodice, I love the psychedelic flowers down the sleeves. The only quibble I have is the white girl nude net. But I hate that shade, so…
All Season, Brie Larson’s PR people have paid E! to tell us what a fashionista she is, when anyone with eye could see she was uncomfortable and miserable in what they’d forced her into. Seeing her in that, I wonder why they don;’t let her dress like this more often.
Rooney Mara, doing her thing.
Jessica Biel was finally allowed to leave the house. She looks thrilled.
Rachael McAdams doesn’t look anything like herself here. But I approve.
Lord have mercy, who knew the Mother of Dragons Emilia Clarke would look best dressed for afternoon tea?
Kate McKinnon, rocking the suit.
Marisa Tomei in Garden Wedding Chic.
Jennifer Jason Leigh, reminding you she’s relevant.
Juno Temple, doing her best to give Cate Blanchett a run for her money.
And Freida Pinto, dressed for day to night.
Cynthia Nixon, in a dress and shoes that says she doesn’t care what you think.
Bel Powley in a dress that says the eyes have it.
Olivia Cooke is a bit overdressed, but she’s young.
Stana Katic, in a really interesting color.
And Mya Taylor in the right blend of dressy and casual.
Anthony Mackie in a sneaker ad.
Idris Elba, doing a Samuel L. Jackson homage.
Michael Keaton wore jeans.
Rami Malek did not wear jeans.
Kumail Nanjiani didn’t get the dress down memo.
Patricia Arquette won last year. She’s going to wear her glasses all the time now and so is her man.
Zoe Kazan and Paul Dano for high-end hipster red carpet wear.
Jason Segel and his wife for tattoo baring.
The Tried Too Hard
Jessica Chastain, you didn’t have to do that. We know who you are already.
Ok, to be fair, Nikki Reed, we probably wouldn’t have remembered you.
And finally, Dree Hemingway, proving that only Cate Blanchett can pull some things off.
