Stephen Colbert Trumps Jeb Bush
As you may have noticed, I rarely post about political stories, partly because I mean for this blog to be a distraction from life, not an echo of it. But Stephen Colbert has thwarted me. As you may know, one of his first guest for the premiere Late Show with Stephen Colbert is republican candidate, and non-too-bright scion on the Bush clan. I’m sure the interview itself will be unremarkable, as though Bush continues to be so massively incompetent at campaigning for president, he makes W look like a rock star, Colbert is not an idiot, and does not plan to start his network career off with a polarizing bang.
Unfortunately, Jeb! made things a little awkward when he decided to use Colbert as a fundraising opportunity…without bothering to ask permission from the Late Show. The stunning ineptness that would lead his campaign would do such a thing (not to mention the totally tone-deaf “bonus” prize that comes with winning) was too much for Colbert to allow. After all, he cannot be seen as promoting a candidate in such a manner, or be considered partisan in any way. Having played a right-wing buffoon for years, this is one of his huge hurdles to cross in moving to network–to show himself as neutral middle of the road to both the lefties who idolized his performance and the right wingers who had no idea it was an act to begin with.
His show could have just quietly stepped on Bush’s people to squash it, and no one would have been the wiser. Instead Colbert has taken the opportunity to show up Bush’s campaign, as well as using the opportunity to raise money for an actual good cause. Well played Colbert.
