SYTYCD Results Shows Cancelled
Is FOX starting to feel like they no longer need Nigel? Via Twitter:
Now, I know a lot of critics say that results shows are lazy TV programming. They’re not wrong. But the performance/results two night format has been key to how Lythgoe’s reality shows (and Cowell’s reality spin offs) work. American Idol has been the ratings lifeblood for FOX, lo this past 9 years. So You Think You Can Dance never caught on quite the way its singing counterpart did, being more esoteric, and with a title that was far more suited to, say, a British Sky Broadcasting channel than an American network channel. But (with the one bad decision to run season 6 in the fall), SYTYCD has always been a summer show, with little competition. It didn’t have to be a ratings juggernaut.
I think it is indicative of the changing TV landscape that FOX has essentially put SYTYCD on notice. By removing the results night, they’ve basically half-cancelled the show. Lythgoe will now have to go back and try and retool the format into something that will end up reflecting how his competition over on NBC work, since neither The Voice, nor The SingOff follow the two-night format.
I hope SYTYCD finds a way through this that doesn’t completely ruin the show. It’s an odd little snowflake, promoting modern dance on network TV. I don’t recap it, mostly because my recaps would consist of “I cried from beauty” or “This left me cold” or “This choreography didn’t fit the piece” and that’s pretty useless as recaps go. But I am a faithful viewer, and I hope this doesn’t mean this will be the last season.
